A more Godly Constitution

PZ Myers beat me to looking at the surreal comments of Huckabee today.

"I have opponents in this race who do not want to change the Constitution," Huckabee told a Michigan audience on Monday. "But I believe it's a lot easier to change the Constitution than it would be to change the word of the living god. And that's what we need to do -- to amend the Constitution so it's in God's standards rather than try to change God's standards so it lines up with some contemporary view."

Wow. I guess people feel it is time to wedge God into the Constitution...I suppose Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, etc, were all crackpots. Now a clear thinker like Huckabee is here to lead us to safety.

Daily Kos:

Presidential wannabe Mike Huckabee has been tearing up the campaign trail in Michigan. With his increasingly religious extremist rhetoric, he has been effectively deepening the rift between conservative Republicans and the evangelical movement.

...

Yes, he wants to amend the Constitution to reflect God's laws. American Taliban anyone? How long before adultery is punishable by stoning? And divorce? Forget about it. We should probably go ahead and cancel the NFL on Sundays too.

But, should we be surprised? Absolutely not. This is the same guy that once told a conference that he wanted to "take this nation back for Christ." ...
This stuff shouldn't disturb us? I think it should.

AMERICAblog:

...

So, would that include adding anti-Catholic language to the Constitution? I mean, clearly Huckabee's version of Christianity includes none of the rest of us Christians, or anybody else, so what he really wants to do is amend the US Constitution to bring it more in line with Baptist theology. That should put a shudder into every non-Baptist in America.

This is why many Americans get uncomfortable when preachers or super religious types run for the presidency.

Crooks and Liars:

...

Please. Make. It. Stop. I hate to break it to the Huckster, but the Middle Ages weren’t really that much fun. Why is it that the Republican Party seems to want to force us all back there?

Yes. Why the rush backwards. It used to be the Republicans wanted us all back in the drecky fifties, it seems they have grander plans to push us backwards.

Some of his aids are apparently saying that in his excitement he did not as artfully express his thought...about redefining the country and Constitution to fit his view of God and godliness...

Is that suppose to make me feel better?
